Cellwright

A free, open source tool for IT and finance teams moving Excel VBA off desktop Office. I run migrations through Scott Campbell Consulting.

Tested on 30 real workbooks

The first scan read 26 of the 30 third party workbooks. Broken drawings and oversized parts hid the VBA; now the scanner skips them and labels the gap.

All 1,261 extracted modules were cross-checked against olevba, an independent extractor. The only two mismatches were one byte that Cellwright keeps and olevba replaces.

How it works

A single Rust executable parses the VBA itself and never runs a macro. Sixty rules flag blockers such as forms and Windows API calls.

Optional Python tools draft LibreOffice Basic or Python replacements and turn Power Query into pandas, keeping the original and a diff.

Code it can’t convert goes on a checklist with a location, a reason and a next action.

Limitations

  • Hour estimates are uncalibrated. No human migration time was measured, so they can’t be used as a budget.
  • Forms aren’t runtime-verified.
  • It’s a preview. The v0.1.1 archives are unsigned and it hasn’t been piloted on a company estate.
